Sing Along – Total Eclipse of the Heart

Questa canzone non poteva assolutamente mancare nel mio blog.
Scritta dal compositore, paroliere e produttore discografico americano Jim Steinman, Total Eclipse of the Heart è sì la signature song di Bonnie Tyler, ma è anche e soprattutto una delle più belle ballate rock di tutti i tempi.
Uscito nei primi mesi del 1983, il pezzo scalò subito le classifiche di tutto il mondo, arrivando a vendere anche 60.000 dischi al giorno!

C’è chi sostiene che il brano sia stato ispirato dalla passione distruttiva e immortale tra Catherine e Heathcliff, i protagonisti di Cime Tempestose di Emily Brontë, un classico della letteratura inglese.
Io ho sempre creduto che il testo raccontasse di una donna che, dopo aver speso gli anni migliori della sua vita (the best of all the years) ad amare un uomo probabilmente già impegnato, comincia a sentire il peso della solitudine (every now and then I get a little bit lonely) e, stanca di ascoltare il suono delle sue lacrime (every now and then I get a little bit tired of listening to the sound of my tears), sogna qualcosa di più (and I dream of something wild). Poi, però, gli basta voltarsi (turn around) e incrociare lo sguardo di lui (and then I see the look in your eyes) per cadere, ancora una volta, tra le sue braccia.

In una intervista rilasciata al mensile Playbill, Steinman dichiarò che il pezzo, il cui titolo originale era “Vampires in Love”, era nato come una canzone d’amore tra vampiri per una versione musical di Nosferatu, che, però, non fu mai messa in scena.
E, in effetti, l’atmosfera del brano è senza dubbio gotica, come decisamente gotica è pure l’ambientazione del video, girato nella suggestiva cornice di Holloway Sanatorium, nel Surrey, Inghilterra, uno splendido edificio dell’ultimo quarto del diciannovesimo secolo, un tempo istituto di ricovero per persone affette da disturbi mentali.

Negli anni, del brano, che è stato utilizzato come colonna sonora di molti film e serie televisive, tra cui anche Romanzo Criminale, e perfino del videogioco Battlefield 4, sono state fatte numerosissime cover di successo, ma la versione originale, cantata dalla voce inimitabile di Bonnie Tyler, per me è e resta la migliore.

Prima di passare all’ascolto, diamo insieme un’occhiata ad alcuni vocaboli ed espressioni che possono aiutarci a entrare meglio nel mood del pezzo.
Cominciamo dagli aggettivi con cui viene descritto lo stato d’animo della protagonista del brano:

lonely = solo
tired = stufo
nervous = nervoso
terrified = terrorizzato
restless = inquieto
helpless = indifeso
angry = arrabbiato

e dalle espressioni con cui si parla, invece, della passione che la lega al suo amante:

powder keg = barile di polvere da sparo
spark = scintilla
