Christmas – What are you looking forward to?
Natale è finalmente alle porte! Certo, i prossimi giorni saranno un delirio, tra scadenze di lavoro, negozi affollati, pacchi e pacchetti e tutto il resto… Ma è Natale! E io adoro il Natale!
Non vedo l’ora di ritrovarmi con tutta la famiglia e poter trascorrere tempo insieme senza la preoccupazione di email da mandare e telefonate da fare, di sfidarci in interminabili partite a RisiKo, di scatenarci in concitati giochi a Dobble, di stringerci tutti sul divano a guardare un bel film di renne, elfi e pupazzi di neve…
E voi, siete anche voi degli amanti del Natale o la sola idea di tutti i preparativi, del traffico in tilt, della corsa ai regali, delle pile di piatti sul lavello e degli aghi di pino ovunque vi fa venire l’orticaria?
Sentiamo insieme cosa amano, e cosa non amano, del Natale i londinesi intervistati per questo video realizzato appena qualche giorno fa da BBC Learning English.
BBC Learning English asked people in London “What are you looking forward to about Christmas?” and this is what they answered.
What they are looking forward to:
– spending some time with their families: for some Christmas is probably the only time of the year when all the family gets together
– watching Christmas movies
– getting children presents and hanging stockings on the fireplace for Santa to fill them with gifts
– Christmas dinner: nut roast, roast turkey, pig in blankets (sausages wrapped in bacon), plum pudding with lots of brandy and a holly sprig on the top.
What they are not looking forward to:
– receiving unwanted presents
– spending lots of money on presents
– the cleanup
– very busy streets
Well, some British Christmas traditions are quite bizarre. Did you catch what the young woman says you could find in the Christmas pudding?
A penny!
Actually, not many people follow this tradition today, but if you do happen to find a penny inside your Christmas pudding, then you are supposed to have wealth and happiness in the coming year. Lucky you!
Talking about the downsides of Christmas, this time of the year London is really hectic. Did you catch the word the last man interviewed uses to describe London the week before Christmas?
Mayhem = a situation that is not controlled or ordered, when people are behaving in a disorganised, confused, and often violent way.
